SAILOR SORENSEN
Accomplishments
Throughout my career, I have reached some amazing milestones. Here I have compiled some of my favorite accomplishments.
Winning First Place in Media Competition
During my first year at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I became fascinated with the topic of self defense. I created a final project for a class around the subject. After submitting my work to my professor, I shortly got an email saying I should submit it to a Writing and Rhetoric First-Year Writing Contest. Without any hesitation, I submitted and expected to never hear back. Fortunately, I did hear a response - and a great one at that. I had won first place on my piece about how we should incorporate free self defense classes on campus. I felt amazing, especially since podcasts weren't and still aren't my typical media format. If you would like to listen to my podcast, it is available at this link.
Creating my own news story to be aired on prime time tv
I found, wrote, interviewed, edited, and produced an entire news story by myself at the age of 18! I was working for a news station over the summer, learning the ins and outs of producing news coverage and everything that went into doing it proficiently and correctly. I found a local story about 'Nosh of the Month,' and ran with it. After a swift phone call and a little bit of planning, I, along with a camera man were on the way to find out what the Nosh was this month. At the end of the interview, my interviewee handed me a savory pastry. I left with two things that day. A tasty dish and an experience is one I will never forget. Flying with the Army's Golden Knights for a news story
While working at a news station over the summer, I was given the opportunity to follow along and help create a news story from 8,000 ft. Alongside Tara Lynch, news anchor for WETM - Elmira, I was able to strap in and interview some members of the elite skydiving team. While I didn't jump out of the plane, I still felt the adrenaline of flying with the parachute door open, and the exhilaration of watching the men measure the wind speed by dropping what seemed like a paper baton, and the ultimate thrill of watching the men jump out to perform their show.
